How to choose rhinestones?

If you're new to Rhinestones, the first question that comes up in your mind must be "How to Choose Rhinestones?"

No matter in local stores or on Internet, they are many, many choices of various kind of rhinestones.  So, how to choose the right rhinestones to buy?

Choosing high quality rhinestones

For rhinestones to appear in high quality, several factors have to be considered, they are: cut, clarity and brilliance.

Cut - the more the facets, the more the sparkle it has
Currently, Swarovski's rhinestones are having most facet cut, they are 14 facets. Czech's Preciosa and Qrhinestone's rhinestones are 12 facets.

Clarity
Clarity very much depends on the lead content of the rhinestones, all high quality rhinestones are lead-crystal. Swarovski has made up their own special formula on the percentage of lead content, which makes their rhinestones having a very high degree of clarity. Some shops are now selling lower cost acrylics rhinestones that are made of acrylic (plastic) not lead crystal, these rhinestones cannot be considered to be a very quality one.

Brillance
The factor of cuts, together with high quality lead-crystal, this determines the degree of Brilliance.

How to determine if the rhinestones is good to buy?
1) check the no. of facets (buy 12 or 14  facets rhinestones, don't buy rhinestones that are having 10 facets or less)
2) check the rhinestones materials, always buy rhinestones made of lead-crystal, do not buy acrylic rhinestones
3) check the back of rhinestone, matt-silver foiled back is always the best to buy for rhinestones (except if you're looking for hotfix rhinestone, which has a glued back)

If you're looking for a economical alternative to Swarovski's rhinestones, we would suggest you to take a look on the rhinestones selling at Qrhinestones.com, they are cheaper than Swarovski's yet is in very high quality that is comparable to them.

Creating your own custom phone case with rhinestones

In this tutorial, we will be demonstrating how to create your own customized phone case with rhinestones.
This is a very gorgeous phone case with a name customized on it. It's perfect as a gift for family members or friends on any special occasions.

Materials used:
Rhinestones - Montana Sapphire & Crystal from Qrhinestones.com
Triangle Plates 5pcs - for holding and flipping rhinestones
Rhinestone picking wax pencil
2 parts epoxy adhesive

Transparent Plastic Phone Case
Pattern printed on paper

In this project, we are making a rhinestone phone case with the initials E.C. Before we apply the rhinestones, it's desirable to first create your own pattern and print it on a paper.
Here,  we are using font type "Corinthia" for the letters, E and C.

Cut the pattern to just fit on the phone case, then stick the pattern at the back of the plastic case by adhesive tape.

With a toothpick, apply a thin layer of the glue on the 2 letters, as shown in the following picture. Do not apply the glue on the background at this stage, we will do the letters first.

Apply the rhinestones on the letter E and C.
TIPS: for calligraphic fonts, it's always desirable to prepare at least 3 sizes of rhinestones, so that the edge looks smoother.

It should look like this after laying the rhinestones onto the phone case.

After we have attach the rhinestones on the letter E and C, then we will need to lay the rhinestones for the background.

Since we are using epoxy glue, the glue will not start to harden in the first hour, so, at this time, we should make use of the flexibility, and apply the smaller rhinestones onto corners. If you dont attach the rhinestones to the corners before the glue harden, you may not be able to squeeze the rhinestones afterwards, because the gap may be too small of the rhinestones to fit.

Lastly, you can apply rhinestones onto the background.
TIPS: when you apply the rhinestones, only apply the glue on a small area, and finish the area before gluing on another area. This is because, the glue hardens on 60 mins, if you apply the glue for an area that is too large to finish within 60 mins, the glue will be hardened and the case will look clumsy if you apply another layer of glue on top of it afterwards.

The finished product will look like this, very sparkling, very shiny and gorgeous!

How many rhinestones are needed to cover Samsung Note

How many rhinestones are needed to cover Samsung Note?

Today, we will talk about the calculations to find out how many rhinestones you will need to cover a Samsung Note phone case.

Firstly, let's find out the dimension of the Samsung Note cellphone.

For Note 2, the measurements is:
81mm X 151mm
OR
3.19"" X 5.94"

Before we calculate how many rhinestones we need to cover the Samsung Note, we will need to decide which size of rhinestones we will choose for this project.

What size of Rhinestones to use when covering a phone case?
Basically, it's recommended to use ss10 or ss12 for covering up an Samsung Note case,
If you choose to cover your phone in all one color, then choose 12SS stones, the application will go fast. But, if you're planning to do some pattern on the case, I'd suggest to go for smaller size ss10, this will give a better detail of the pattern.

Below shows a chart indicating the number of rhinestones they are needed to cover a sq.inch.

Size Number Needed to Cover
A One (1) inch Strip
Number Needed to Cover
One (1) Square Inch
ss8 (25.4 / 2.4) = 10.6 10.6 * 10.6 = 112
ss10 (25.4 / 2.8) = 9 9 * 9 = 81
ss12 (25.4 / 3.1) = 8.1 (8.1* 8.1) = 66

As a result, to cover a Samsung Note with ss10 stones, we need:
= Area of Samsung Note in sq inch * # of rhinestones needed to cover 1 sq inch
= (3.19"" X 5.94" ) * 81
= 1534 pieces

However, in this calculation, we assumed that the rhinestones are tidily applied one by one, in a very orderly manner shown below.

There will be quite a lot of spaces in between the rhinestones. This is something we dont like to see when sticking the rhinestones. We intend to interleave the rows of rhinestones offset every other row for a very tight setting. So, we should be purchasing around 1/4 more than the calculations we got above.

Therefore,
No. of rhinestones needed to cover Samsung Note (back) using ss10 rhinestones: 1900 pcs approx

How many rhinestones do I need to cover my iPhone 5?

How many rhinestones do I need to cover my iPhone 5?

That's a very frequently asked questions by customers. The reason we would like to find out how many rhinestones we need in a project is we do not want to buy too many extra rhinestones (this will increase cost).

For iPhone 5, the measurements is:
58.6mm X 123.8mm
OR
2.31" X 4.87"

Before we calculate how many rhinestones we need to cover the iPhone 5, we will need to decide which size of rhinestones we will choose for this project.

What size of Rhinestones to use when covering a phone case?
Basically, it's recommended to use ss10 or ss12 for covering up an iPhone case,

ss12 (25.4 / 3.1) = 8.1 (8.1* 8.1) = 66

As a result, to cover a iPhone with ss12 stones, we need:
= Area of iPhone in sq inch * # of rhinestones needed to cover 1 sq inch
= (4.87 * 2.31 ) * 66
= 742 pieces

However, in this calculation, we assumed that the rhinestones are tidily applied one by one, in a very orderly manner shown below.

There will be quite a lot of spaces in between the rhinestones. This is something we dont like to see when sticking the rhinestones. We intend to interleave the rows of rhinestones offset every other row for a very tight setting. So, we should be purchasing around 1/4 more than the calculations we got above.

Also, there is one more thing you should consider, are you going to stick the rhinestones on the edge as well? if yes, then you will also need to calculate the no of rhinestones needed for the edge.

To make things easier for you, we have come up with the ANSWER which you want to know (without you doing the calculation on your own).

No. of rhinestones needed to cover iPhone 5 (back) using ss10 rhinestones: 950 pcs approx

No. of rhinestones needed to cover iPhone 5 (back+edge) using ss10 rhinestones: 1300 pcs approx

How to glue rhinestones to your face?

Besides gluing rhinestones to personalized an item, rhinestones are also widely used on makeup.

So, how to glue rhinestones to your face?

To glue rhinestones on face, use the eyelash glue which can be easily bought from drug store, will be good enough. Use a tweezers to hold the rhinestone, then apply a thin layer of eyelash glue onto the back of the rhinestones, wait around 30 seconds, then press the rhinestone lightly to the skin.

What size of rhinestones to be used on face?

That's depends on the area where you stick the rhinestones to, if you're sticking them onto your eyelids, we would recommend smaller sizes like ss6(2mm) or ss8(2.4mm).
If you're using them on your face, larger size like ss10 (2.8mm) will be good.

What sizes of rhinestones should I use to stick on a phone case?

When it comes to choosing the appropriate size of rhinestones to be used, every people will have a different preference. However, there is a generally preferred size to be used on decorating phone case.

At Qrhinestones, we recommend customers to use ss10 (2.8mm) or ss12 (3.0mm).

If you are sticking the rhinestones onto the phone case to form pattern, we would suggest you to use ss10, this is because smaller rhinestones will let you to make the pattern more easily with less gap formed, and is more precise.

The below image shows a phone case made of ss10:

If you dont need to form any pattern on the case,  just for plain color, then we would suggest you to use ss12, because when no pattern is required to form, gaps are less likely to occur and we can just use a little big larger rhinestones like.

TIPS: Always prepare a small quantity of smaller sized rhinestones

When doing phone case decoration, remember you should always prepare a small amount of smaller sized rhinestones, to fill up the gaps. Smaller sized rhinestones recommended are ss6 (2mm). This is because when you make up a pattern with the rhinestones, there are always gaps form which cannot be covered up by the larger rhinestones, so it's a good idea always prepare some smaller rhinestones, say 100 pieces should be enough.

Conclusions

When you decorate a phone case, choose the major size of rhinestones to be used (ss10 or ss12), then also prepare a small qty of smaller rhinestones (ss6) which will be used to fill up any gaps that cannot be covered by the larger rhinestones.
